I've been looking at iperius, this should work for your use case sactobob:
https://www.iperiusbackup.net/en/incremental-vm-replication-even-for-vmware-esxi-free/
Same one-time purchase licensing with free lifetime upgrades/support but I think it's more feature rich than uranium. I haven't had a chance to trial it but the documentation looks decent enough.
I do worry about the licensing model for the health of the company but both companies have been in business for a long while.

I use their remote product, which has lots of issues that I'm constantly working around and opening tickets. I have their backup software installed at a couple of customer locations. Last I used it to test a VM backup it was about 3-4 times slower and took a lot of network traffic due to no compression. There's no remote agent on the host from what I can tell and no vSphere client. I guess I'll end up going with a no frills backup. It's really sad Trilead sold to HPE, it looks like this was done to take out competition which seems to be the normal these days. I don't blame Trilead, hope they got want they wanted. I'm sure they have a non-compete, but hopefully they come back someday with something else once that ends.

I guess it will not happening. RIP VM explorer. It was (and almost still) better than Data Protector Express.

I agree, so sad. It's pretty clear HP bought these guys to put them out of business, it's SOP for many companies that plan on a replacement product. And it's obvious the replacement product HAD to have been in development when they were bought.
I still don't know what the replacement is, where to get it, and most importantly what will it cost me compared to my annual renewal of around $300. I'd bet it's no where near that. The process just to get information is silly.

Just to keep you guys updated in case you aren't following the forum very much, an update has been released like a week ago:
https://www.microfocus.com/en-us/products/vm-server-backup/download
They have created version/hotfix 7.1.3.
I'm currently performing a test run using Vcenter server build 16709110 released in August 2020. Seems to work fine!
It is good to see that MF are not totally ignoring us after all.
