Vibe file/folder recovery if purged

Good morning.

Vibe file and folder recovery works fine as long as a user does not check the Purge immediate flag.

However once a user checks that flag file and folder recovery becomes horrible.

We need to restore Oracle and Lucerne databases to last known good points in a parallel environment and basically build a parallel Vibe installation to access the files.

Our users expect Vibe to have the same recovery speeds as an OES file server would, where its mere minutes as we can back it up and restore it with commercial backup solutions.

What are you doing to backup and recover files from their Vibe installations?

And is there any way to remove the purge immediate option? We have checked the docs and most recovery steps say to contact Novell technical Support.

Re: Vibe file/folder recovery if purged

Hi Paul.

Yes, the backup situation is really "suboptimal". However, this is the same for any database-backed web portal. I don't know of an easy item-based backup/restore in SharePoint, for example - Technet says step 1 is "Creating a Recovery Farm". Also CMSs like Typo3 and its like don't have that feature. And that is simply because there is no single item. An entry including its comments in Vibe is made up of a file for each attachment (including some folders for them) plus any number of database table rows that are cross-referenced and have timestamps, some of which get a "deleted" flag, others are simply purged (determined by auditing necessity). So it is really hard to do, unfortunately. We here at Code and Concept have this topic as one of our recurring brainstorming session topics.

However: as bleak as that may look, what most people who inadvertently (or on purpose) purge content do want back is the files that were attached to the entry. There is a quick way of getting those back and reupload them that we can show you how to use. It's all a bit complex to simply drop in here, but it works.
We also can help you with disabling the option to delete things immediately. This means people will have to use the trash first and delete it from the trash to really get rid of it. This means you are "safer" with the unwanted purges, but you will need to monitor space a little more, since there is no automatic recycling interval on the trash folders. Just reach out to us directly if you want our help :).

Re: Vibe file/folder recovery if purged

If you're just looking for the files, you may be in luck. When purges, files go (at least temporarily) to "archivefilestore" in your Vibe repository. I threw together a Cool Solutions article about it last year after I had a similar experience. While this applies specifically to a single attachment or version being deleted from a still-intact entry, I believe it applies to purged entries (assuming you know the binder and entry IDs).

Hope this helps...
