Hi

I have this error details whenever I try to add ADO.NET Data Source, the message box says it's an unhanded exception

here is the details:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Hope somebody know what's happening, I am using Visual COBOL PE for Visual Studio 2010

RE: ADO.NET Connection Editor Crash!!

Jump to solution

Development has completed their analysis of the problem with the MySQL Data Provider.

Our current ADO editor expects providers to expose an interface that will return a list of properties for their driver.
MySQL does not provide this interface.

Consequently we cannot create MySQL connections in our current ADO editor.
Providing this capability in our current ADO editor is an enhancement and may be addressed in a future product release.

What we have done is to prevent the bad behavior of the current ADO tool when it encounters a non-standard connection provider like MySQL.
This fix will be available in an upcoming hotfix for Visual COBOL 2.1.

Below is an example of how you can connect to MySQL using a Format 6 Connect statement .
This approach allows you to connect to a MySQL database by providing a connection string.
This string invokes the MySQL provider which is specified in the string itself.

We hope you can use this approach as a workaround.

RE: ADO.NET Connection Editor Crash!!

It looks like the crash is occuring in the Microsoft Oracle ADO Provider.

I tested here and I do not see this problem.

Can you add a connection using a different ADO Provider like SQL Server SqlClient Provider or does the error occur for any provider?

If you wish to connect to Oracle through ADO I would strongly suggest that you download and install the Oracle Data Provider for .NET (ODP.NET) from Oracle and do not use the Microsoft version.

Under what operating system are you running?

When does the editor crash, when you select a driver, when you save it, etc?

RE: ADO.NET Connection Editor Crash!!

Jump to solution

I cannot reproduce this problem here.

What version of Visual Studio are you using, Visual Studio 2010 Professional, Enterprise, Ultimate or did you install Visual Studio 2010 Shell that is supplied with Visual COBOL?

At what point did the Connection Editor stop working?

Were you ever able to create a connection or is this your first one?

It is strange that the exception refers to the Oracle ADO provider when it is a mySQL connection that you created.

Do you have an Oracle ADO connection saved in the editor?

Can you remove the connections that you do have saved?

If possible can you post a screenshot of the Connection Editor just before you get this exception?

Thanks.

RE: ADO.NET Connection Editor Crash!!

Hi,

I am using the supplied Visual Studio Shell. The error occurs right after I started it, I've installed windows xp on a virtual machine and then installed visual cobol then I fired the ADO Connection Editor and  it just gives the same error I feel like it's a curse related to me!!! there was connections related to MS SQL Server and since I don't use it  and I don't have it installed there where an error related to them but when I removed them it just started to crash!!

Thanks

RE: ADO.NET Connection Editor Crash!!

Jump to solution

So the steps to try to recreate the problem are:

1.  Create a new Virtual machine with Windows XP installed (what VM are you using, VMWare?)

2.  Install Visual COBOL PE with the Visual Studio 2010 Shell.

3.  Install the Visual COBOL License

4.  Start ADO Connection Editor from Start Menu-->All Programs-->Micro Focus Visual COBOL->Data Tools-->ADO Connection Editor (or are you starting Visual Studio first and then starting from Tools menu?)

5.  then what???

6. What type of connection are you trying to create, User, System, .NET 2.0, 4.0?

Am I missing any steps here, such as installing any other software or ADO providers, etc. first?

Can you please answer the embedded questions?

Also if possible could you look in your machine.config file and do a search on connectionStrings and tell me what it has in this section?

machine.config for .NET Framework 4.0 should be in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Config folder.

Thanks.

RE: ADO.NET Connection Editor Crash!!

Jump to solution

Do you get the same error for any of the Data Providers?

Try the SqlClient one and see if you get the same error.

Also try starting the ADO Connection Editor from Start Menu-->All Programs-->Micro Focus Visual; COBOL-->Data Tools and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks.

RE: ADO.NET Connection Editor Crash!!

Jump to solution

Yes this does seem to be caused by the MySQL Data Provider.

just installed the MySQL Connector Net 6.65 on my system and now I get the same error that you do.

In fact I cannot even start Visual Studio anymore because it says invalid Data Provider.

I will investigate.

Thanks.
