Actions failing with "Error 1008 Calling LoadUserProfile"

Environment: Zenworks 10.0.2.0, windows xp pro sp2 pl (polish)

Some install actions often fail with error: "[DAU] [Error 1008 Calling LoadUserProfile.]" in the zenworks log. In the windows event log I can see error 1505 ("Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.") followed by zenworks error ("Error 1008 Calling LoadUserProfile.").
So far seen it with registry (system) edit, "run script" (as dynamic administrator) and "edit file".
The same workstation sometimes fails, sometimes not. It looks that it happen more often or even exclusively when bundle is set to "force run" (launch schedule) as opposed to launching it by the user.

Anyone can help me with this?

Re: Actions failing with "Error 1008 Calling LoadUserProfile"

When you are getting this error, are you logging into Windows w/o the Logged
in User's Profile being reset?
Or is this error generated when the ZEN Window is distributing apps.

What I suspect is happening is that a Profile is being locked and not able
to be used.
This could be happening to the user who is logging in.
Or it could be happening with t he "Dynamic User" used in some of the ZCM
Bundles.

It would be useful to know which one it applies to.
In general it should be obvious is the Windows User is getting a new/blank
profile.

Re: Actions failing with "Error 1008 Calling LoadUserProfile

Hi,

> When you are getting this error, are you logging into Windows
> w/o the Logged in User's Profile being reset?

I am not sure if I understand you here. I do not use ZEN for profile & GPO management. I am logged into Windows with a profile of a domain user. Profile is local to the workstation (no roaming profiles here) and as far as I can tell is error-free i.e. it loads and saves w/o a problem. Errors happen only when ZEN distributes bundles and they happen for admin and regular users alike - so I think that logged-in user group membership (rights) does not make any difference. IMO it looks like a problem with loading/using dynamic administrator (DAU) profile, not the logged-in user profile.
Especially, that errors happen for those actions that require elevated rights, with an exception of msi installs. MSI's install just fine.
For example: I have a bundle with two actions: msi install (run with dynamic admin rights to show progress and such) and regsitry edit. The first action completes OK, the second never completes ie. ZEN displays it as beeing applied ("Installing 2/2") without trowing error for hours.

> Or is this error generated when the ZEN Window is distributing apps.

Yes. It is generated when ZEN is distributing bundles. It seems that it is more likely to occur when apps are being run by schedule as opposed to user launch (ie user click in ZEN Window).

> Or it could be happening with t he "Dynamic User" used
> in some of the ZCM Bundles.

IMO it is exactly the case - Dynamic User.
One more finding supporting this theory:
In windows "Documents and Settings" directory I have found several directories named with "garbage" characters: "䅄ㅕ㤲㘲ⴱ㜲〲̀ﰎδ" "䅄㥕㤹㘭㠶1gram" etc. Some are empty, some are partially populated, and some look like full profiles. Some belong to users know only by SID, and some to different local DAU users (for example: DAU142307-1237) - there are four DAUxxx local users on this computer.
Maybe DAU is failing because some codepage/localization problems (this is WXP Pro PL system)? I have seen such things before - ie setting rights problems with other apps - as localized windows has for example different names for well-known security principals and such...

Re: Actions failing with "Error 1008 Calling LoadUserProfile"

Thanks Pawel,

That is precisely what I was asking.
It appears as if for some reason the Dynamic User Profile is not completely
unlocking.

I have serious doubts this will help in your case, but you could try this.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en

You may also want to check the size of your default profile on your PC and
see if its possible to make it as small as possible.
I'm still not very convinced that may help.
However, that is the best thing I can think of at the moment.

Hi,

I am not sure if it is a unlocking problem:
1. Error logged into eventlog is Userenv 1505 with detail message given path not found". Not sure, but I think that locked/corrupted profile would give different message.
2. There are profile directories named with garbage characters in "Document and setttings" folder. If ZEN creates profile with invalid characters and later on tries to access it - it could be the reason...

Unfortunately - you were right, it does not help...

Re: Actions failing with "Error 1008 Calling LoadUserProfile"

Garbage characters in the profiles directory? Hmmm. That could definitely
do it.

Is Windows Setup to use a language other than English as the default?
Do the user names use non-English characters? (Example - With Accents?)

Can you test with an English install if you are not doing so already?

Re: Actions failing with "Error 1008 Calling LoadUserProfile

Hi,

> That could definitely do it.

Yep. Profile directories of DAU users (multiple for some reason) are named with garbage chars (displayed as squares). Names of DAU users (as seen by "Local Users and Groups" mmc snapin) are OK - ie. no garbage here.

> Is Windows Setup to use a language other than English as the default?

Hmm... not sure what setting u are writing about, but this is national version of Windows XP - precisely XP Pro PL (Polish) and its language defaults to Polish of course...

> Do the user names use non-English characters? (Example - With Accents?)

No. They don't. But I don't think it has anything to do with user accounts as the problem occurs only with DAU "autocreated" profile...

> Can you test with an English install if you are not doing so already?

Shame - but I have none and simply can not check righ now... But I am quite sure it would be all right with regular English WXP.

Can you email me a screenshot of the directory listing with bad characters?
I will try and get this reported as a defect.

Re: Actions failing with "Error 1008 Calling LoadUserProfile"

Pmazurkiewicz,

that's quite normal - DAU profiles are always created with "odd" names - easier to ensure it doesn't clash with a real user. What is broken is the mechanism to clean these up - see http://www.novell.com/support/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=3149491&sliceId=SAL_Public&dialogID=56401367&stateId=0%200%2056405182

Re: Actions failing with "Error 1008 Calling LoadUserProfile"

This is a totally different issue.
It's not a matter of profiles being left behind.
Rather, it's an issue that Windows can't access the profiles in the first
place to run the Dynamic User Action.

He is getting this....

"1. Error logged into eventlog is Userenv 1505 with detail message given
*path not found*". Not sure, but I think that locked/corrupted profile
would give different message."

The random names likely contain characters that are not addressable via
Windows.

Re: Actions failing with "Error 1008 Calling LoadUserProfile"

Craig,

or that we're expecting certain groups, like "administrators"? Or it's
a codepage issue, and the "strange" characters that are ok in English
don't work?
