Agent Primary Server Failover

Hi All

Can someone tell me how the adaptive agent decides to choose which server to connect to?, we have two primary servers in our zone and it always connects to the same one, even when the first primary server is switched off they agent authentication will fail.

We moved the sybase database from one server to another and still the agent will not authenticate. So we added a DNS round robin so that the second server had the same DNS name as the primary and that kind of works (slow access) but seems like a very dodgy way of getting things to work from the second server.

So just to clarify:-

Server1 (First Primary On) When this is on all works well.

Server1 (First Primary Down) The Second Zone Member Server2 does not work even when it holds the database, the agent still tries to connect to Server1.

We make a DNS Round Robin so that Server1&Server2 resolve to the DNS of Server1.ourcomany.com it appears to work but seems a bit of a cowboy fix to me, is this really the way we would recover from a primary crash if we did not use remote databases.

Re: Agent Primary Server Failover

I'm guessing the failure to the 2nd Server is failing when the first server
is down because that is your Certificate Authority.
Are you using an Internal or External Cert?

Re: Agent Primary Server Failover

Yes we are using an external Certificate Authority We are going to both servers via https this does not present the problem with certificates. Why do you think its a Certificate Authority problem?

Re: Agent Primary Server Failover

Not if using external.
I was thinking if you were using an internal and the CA was down.........

The Failover SHOULD work.
Not sure why it's not.
Gotta think about it.

If others have thoughts.....

Re: Agent Primary Server Failover

Sorry to bump this old thread... do you have any more insight on that issue? We have 2 different zones, each with 2 different primary servers. It seems when we install the agent, it is harcoded to talk to one of the primary server, and if it goes down the other one doesn't become the backup (bundles just fail). Can we configure anything on the workstation or server to add the 2nd server as a backup? I haven't found any good information on that subject yet.

Re: Agent Primary Server Failover

I checked the default closest server rules and they are looking fine (the 2 servers are listed in all of them). So I did another test this week by shutting down one of the primary server in my LAB environment, and this time it worked! I tried distributing a bundle, doing a refresh, rebooting and I had no errors whatsoever. However it seems to take a little bit longer than usual, as if it was trying the 1st server, timed out after 30 seconds then went to the other one.

I still don't understand where the information about the 2nd primary server is stored, I tried looking in the registry but I coudln't find any instances of the 2nd server, only the first one. Is there a way to check locally on the station what is the current configuration? I just wanna make sure everything is fine in PROD as I can't really shutdown the server anytime I want...
