Bundle to force WSUS updates

Hi all: Does anyone have a bundle/script, that they can share, that forces the installation of Windows Updates? Chris.

Re: Bundle to force WSUS updates

I'm not sure what you are asking?
If you are using WSUS, you configure WSUS via a GPO or Reg Settings.

If you are just using "Windows Update", you can only configure stuff
such as "AutoInstall", but not scheduling control.

You can download specific patches and push them just like any software
package, they all have switches.

Then of course there is ZENworks Patch Management which has its own stuff.

Forcibly initiate an update? I have a Bundle for that, but just using
the regular stuff, no WSUS.

If you'e truly using WSUS, there is no way to *force* the installation
of updates I'm afraid. The best there is is to tell WSUS to do it now,
which it may adhere to or not. The command to do this is
"wuauclt /detecnow"
, and is the best you get from WSUS. Obviously you can run this command
from a very very simple ZCM bundle.

Re: Bundle to force WSUS updates

There is a utility we're currently using to great success. So much so we've added it to our image build. We're using version 1.1 which is available from several sources, there is a new version 2.0 with new features that look good. However for just being able to run updates when you want to 1.1 should be good enough.

For us, if we want to update, we can create a bundle that will call WuInstall /install /reboot 120. This command would find all patches we've approved on the WSUS server, download them and install them and will then display a restart warning. The computer will then restart 120 seconds after finishing the updates. We run the WuInstall bundle with system privileges.

WuInstall is a command line tool that makes it possible to install Windows Updates on demand. This gives you full control over the patching process. You decide what patches should be applied when and on which machine.

Depending on the System configuration it uses either the internal WSUS server or the external Microsoft Update Server to look for available updates. Afterwards those can be downloaded and installed.
