Dell cdc_ether USB NIC - does not recieve dhcp address

Has anyone tried Dell dcd-ether usb nic (Realtek)??

I'm trying to pxe boot a laptop with a cdc_ether nic connected through usb. I'm able to boot using a cdrom, but when using pxe I'm unable to get an ipaddress. From the logger screen I can see that dhcp times out, and the driver is loaded. When using the cdrom it will get a ip address. From the screen where it says it can't find zenworks repository, I have tried to go to expert, and launch a terminal. Doing an ifconfig also shows the nic as eth0. Trying to get an ip address from there also fails (using dhcpcd eht0) with "timed out". I can manually assign an ip adress using "ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.100 netmask 255.255.255.0" it will get assigned, but I'm unable to ping anything. Any suggestions?? Thanks

Probably is it picking up the wrong driver, any chance of you opening an
SR so engineering can take a look? They will need the type and PCI id of
the NIC, see:

Tkp,

to add to what Anders has said, are you on the latest imaging update
for your version of ZCM?

Re: Dell cdc_ether USB NIC - does not recieve dhcp address

Hi,

I was away for short holiday - Jvmorrell, have you worked out a work around yourself while waiting for the SR to complete? And, yes I'm on latest imaging update. Please let me know if you have found a way to make it work manually. Thanks.

Re: Dell cdc_ether USB NIC - does not recieve dhcp address

I have this issue sometimes with my lenovo USB NIC. I load maintanance mode and once loaded there are no lights on the nic. I unplug the usb nic and plug it back in. Let me know if this gives you lights. if it does then run this command.

rm /var/run/dhcpcd-eth0.pid
dhcpcd eth0

if that doesnt work try

rm /var/run/dhcpcd-em1.pid
dhcpcd em1

I have my settings .txt create a N.sh command that once I load the command all I need to do is type n and it does this for me. Hope that works for now.

Re: Dell cdc_ether USB NIC - does not recieve dhcp address

Hi Mark,

I tried to reqeust a new dhcp address, however I did not unplug cable. I find it a bit strange that it works when booting from cdrom and not through pxe. I can't find the missing peace - but i will try to unplug the cable and request a new ip address.

Thanks

That is weird, can you do both and for each check what driver you have
and what version?

Ethtool -eth0
modinfo <modulefile>

Re: Dell cdc_ether USB NIC - does not recieve dhcp address

Anders, Im back at the office tomorrow where I have it for testing/setup. I will try it out then - and yes that is very strange. I also thought it was just a matter of adding newid. But I will try to compare tomorrow and post information here.

Thanks again.

Re: Dell cdc_ether USB NIC - does not recieve dhcp address

OK, So I spent some more time on this. I just can't figure out what's going on. Today I created a bootable usb stick, configured with zenworks imaging. That also ends the same place as with PXE.
Runing ehttool and modinfo shows the exact same information in both situations (PXE and CD). I have tried to unpack initrd and compare files between CD and the PXE files, but just can't figure out what is missing to get it going. So for now I'm still only able to boot from CD
