How do you do inventory?

Hey all,
we're finally starting to keep track of all our equipment, etc.
I got ZAM installed (inventory half only, not license management) and I
really like it.. I've already remotely installed the client to all the
PCs in the domain (that are on, i guess).
Currently our workstations get named as whoever is using them "JOE" for
example. Not exactly the best way to do things, as "JOE" might not be
around forever..

Anyway, i'm just curious how you guys do it at your places. FYI we are
an all Dell shop. Plan on putting some type of asset sticker on the
computers, etc.

Also, what do you do for a brand new unit that arrives and isnt on
network yet?

Thanks in advance!

Why not use the Dell asset tag? (or any other manuf serial number)
It can be the name and your asset tag number. There's no point having
references to references...
Depending on how you do your builds (imaging?) you maybe ablr to use dmi
info to auto name, or perhaps have some sort of vbs that use wmi post build...

Re: How do you do inventory?

Well, Im also thinking about users calling the helpdesk for support,
ie: "whats the tag on your comp?" so we can hop on , but then again..
zenworks can also be "remote controlled" by the username, so might be a
moot point. Then theres things non-dell, like printers. I assume by
"asset tag" you mean "service tag"?

Re: How do you do inventory?

We assign each new PC a sequential number (e.g. CS-00195) and put it on
the front with a label maker. We use the same number as the Windows
computer name, so they show up in all the ZEN apps as this number. You
can get an idea of the age of a system by the number, since they are
sequential.
