Reboot only if needed - Windows 7/8.1

Does anyone know of a method to detect whether Windows requires a reboot using a bundle? I thought there was a registry setting that could be reference that would indicate this option. Something that even if ZPM installs patches and the end user suspends the reboot if that bundle is ran the reboot would be initialized to complete the install of software successfully? I would really like to have it detect if a reboot is required and then launch the reboot/shutdown action but am willing to write a script to do the reboot if required.

Thanks
