Remote Dedicated Database Server

I'm wondering at what size of environment you need a dedicated database server. We are planning to use a remote MS SQL server, but would like to utilize an existing server that has more than adequate space and performance capacity. I read most of the PDF documentation and I think I remember reading that Novell will only support dedicated remote database servers with no other databases installed.

Am I wrong? Can anybody help me find this requirement in the documentation if it does exist?

Re: Remote Dedicated Database Server

AFAIK, the only doc that mentions anything to DB requirements is under 'Database Requirements - Section 1.3' and 'Pre-Installation Tasks - Section 2.3' at Novell Documentation.

I could see nowhere mentioned that there should be no databases installed on the remote database server.

Re: Remote Dedicated Database Server

Thanks for the reply...

We're going to do the best to size the environment correctly, but if we do later have to move to a dedicated server, is that difficult?

Re: Remote Dedicated Database Server

If you mean that you want to move the existing data to a new MS SQL server, it is a simple process. All it requires is that you point the ZCM server to the new database IP. Though I had never had a chance to do so myself, I got to know that using the the MS SQL Studio to 'Migrate' the data truncates some rows in the db. I would suggest having a test done before actually moving the production setup.

Re: Remote Dedicated Database Server

I've moved our DB around a few times and it's a 5 minute job if that, the longest part is waiting for it to copy to the new server 🙂
