Repeated Boot Repair on Win7 after 11.1a agent install

I am getting a spattering of clients that are getting a couple of events after the ZAA11.1a install. The first one is a repeated loop of Windows 7 boot repair prompts. This one seems to be a stuck pattern which the boot repair will get stuck in a cycle of repeatedly running. If I move the process to normal boot I can get one maybe two good boots into the OS but the pattern will start to repeat soon after. This has been happening directly after the install of the agent install. I haven't been able to identify what it is trying to fix yet either.

The other issue is that even after 11.1a agent install I am still getting a lot of Blue Screens from Windows 7 laptops (doesn't seem to occure in any of the desktops yet) The blue screen issues started out related to NDIS crashes which my AV (Panda EndPoint Security) and ZCM11 both have drivers for. The same laptops worked extremely well under ZCM 10.3 for several months without incident. I have a few dump files from the crashes but haven't been able to pin point a reason for the crash. I have a few clients that are reporting 4 to 7 crashes a day all with the same issue.

Anyone have any suggestions on further steps to pinpoint what is going on with the crashes and boot issues. On several of the laptops I am on the verg of removing ZENworks in order to give the end users the ability to work without issue. It would be counter productive to say the least to do so but the crashes are starting to cause major issues with peoples productivity.

Thanks

Re: Repeated Boot Repair on Win7 after 11.1a agent install

Can you try renaming
C:\Program Files (x86)\Novell\ZENworks\bin\preboot\ziswin.exe to *.xxx
and see if that helps.

Not a fix, this is what will update the ZISD off a device and I wonder
if for some reason the ZISD is fighting with the Boot Sector stuff.

I've never heard of this, but its a thought.

Other than that, check for any Bundles that are being pushed.........

Re: Repeated Boot Repair on Win7 after 11.1a agent install

Craig, I will try that and see if this helps.

Funny you should mention a pushed bundle. I just finished talking with one of the individuals and she reported a crash twice which both occured around the same time I pushed out a Flash update to her computer via ZPM. The server reported errors (exit error-40) and she said her screen flashed a blue screen quickly (she didn't catch what it said) and rebooted.

I looked through the patches for 11.1 but didn't see anything that I haven't deployed to several of the most common or reoccuring laptops (incluing the ZESM update).

I have talked with a vendor about having them open an SR for me but am waiting on approval for the cost... Got to love school system!

Thanks for the help.

Re: Repeated Boot Repair on Win7 after 11.1a agent install

I have renamed the ziswin.exe file like you suggested on two systems that were in a constant loop and it resolved this issue. I have a couple of questions on this path. Since this is possibly having issues with the name of the computer or wanting to check/rename the system what is the possibility of fixing the issue by removing it from the zone and placing it back in the zone after a reboot? Or am I thinking incorrectly with what the possibly issue might be?

The systems that are having issues with this have been moved over from 10.3 zone to a new zone that started out on 11.0 with this issue occuring after the 11.1a upgrade. It seemed to start happening to the laptops almost immediately after the update to the client.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Repeated Boot Repair on Win7 after 11.1a agent install

I would pursue and SR.

My Guess is that for some reason, the ZISD and some Windows Boot items
may be writing to the same location, which should not happen.

I want to be careful about making too many assumptions, since this is
the first I've heard of the issue, but ZISWIN is the one part of zen
that writes outside of the normal file system so it was a suspect based
on your description.

Re: Repeated Boot Repair on Win7 after 11.1a agent install

I put this in another BSOD post but I will add it here. I to have had the
exact same issue. I am still in a test environment. no bundle install
pushes. Just a policy bundle with DLU, Admin rights, remote control and ZCM
launcher and all assigned to the WS device. I have three laptops and three
desktops. all HP. One Elite book (win7 sp1 64)started with the boot repair
loop. I got in once. uninstalled the agent and had the laptop removed from
the Zone. rebooted and that was all she wrote. BSOD after that. Another
Probook with same OS. BSOD after 1a agent update and also on a 6715b XPSP3
system. All three desktops, two win7sp1 64bit and one XPSP3 have been fine.
So why the laptops only? I have seen similar reports in another BSOD thread
in this forum.

Re: Repeated Boot Repair on Win7 after 11.1a agent install

I think I just finished reading your other post. I have had all kinds of strange issues with the ZCM11 and now 11.1a client. I thought at first it was my AV (Panda Endpoint Security) but I have a few clients that I removed the AV from the system and they are still having issues. I haven't seen anything on the XPSp3 systems just the Windows 7 systems. I am using EndPoint Security Manager and would like to continue to use it if at all possible. My other issue is we are a school and my boss, so far, has refused to purchase support. So I am trying to get a vendor to open it up for me so I can hopefully get this resolved.
I believe my issue is related to a NDIS issue since I can really get things BSOD when I have my AV installed. They both have NDIS modules.

I agree that this has something to do with the laptop form factor. I am running HP's (4520s, 620, Compaq 620) I have a few 6715b's but not enough to know if they are effected as well. None of my desktops are doing this at this point.

Thanks for the info.

Re: Repeated Boot Repair on Win7 after 11.1a agent install

I will add that I do not have an endpoint security subscription. So it is
disabled in my environment. The Elite laptop did have F-Secure client
security installed. It was suggested to me by my consultant that maybe the
boot sector protection is what is causing the issue but I pointed out that
it is only happening on laptops. This takes me back to my 3.x and 4.x days
with ZFD. It took a long time to get things settled and working. I am not
looking forward to another three year cycle before this gets stable.

Re: Repeated Boot Repair on Win7 after 11.1a agent install

EndPoint Mgmt is always installed, regardless of settings.
Features are required for non ZESM functionality.

However, It would be best to start another thread, this one is drifting.
The original poster had an issue with ZISWIN causing Boot Sector issues.
That has nothing to do with ZESM and likely nothing to do with BSOD.
