Toggle Ignore in System Update

I am hoping I am just over-thinking this but I don't see the actual answer out there.... While getting a system update to a baseline state, if I toggle devices that are offline to be ignored then is that just for that schedule or forever. What I am trying to determine is whether or not those machines would get the SU pushed to them when they came back online since the zone would then be baselined to a version newer than what they have installed? Or will those devices ignore that system update going forward as well?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Toggle Ignore in System Update

Neophate,

you're saying "this device doesn't need to be updated for this
schedule" - should be OK if you do another deployment

Re: Toggle Ignore in System Update

Thanks Shaun. As always your response is appreciated.

Can we go one step further though on this one? So lets say I push the SU to several selected devices and I have a few machines that are offline so I set them to ignore. Then when I want to move to the all devices stage will I need to set the same devices to ignore once again? Finally, if those devices were ignored during both the per device and all devices phase but do come back online later then will they get the SU because it is baselined or will they still ignore it? (This is not hypothetical, I am in the middle of this exact process currently)

Re: Toggle Ignore in System Update

Neophate,

if you're at all devices stage, why would you need or want to mark them
as ignored?

Re: Toggle Ignore in System Update

We want to get the zone baselined to 11.2.1 MU2 an prep for 11.2.3. Currently was are baselined to 11.1a. We are not permitted to delete devices from ZCM without good reason as a matter of policy from above. These devices are most likely on a shelf as cold spares awaiting re-image but I can't say for sure. When we go to 11.2.3, if we can't purge the non-baselined system updates then we will have to grow the volumes on all 37 of our primary servers. *IF* the ingored devices would try to get the baselined SU the next time they come online and I assume they are running 11.1a, then I cannot purge the SUs for 11.2.0, 11.2.1 or 11.2.1 MU2 since it is a chained update. I would then need to decide if I need to hunt these machines down and fire them up or get permission to delete them from the zone.

We are trying to get all of these smaller processes hammered out while our zone is still small and somewhat managebale being at only around 14,000 managed workstations currently.
(Man I hope that makes sense... I over-think this stuff sometimes.)

Re: Toggle Ignore in System Update

Note: Baselining is not required or needed to go from 11.2.1 to 11.2.3.

Re: Toggle Ignore in System Update

We know it is not required. Our concern is really more around purging old system updates and how that may impact machines that think they need an update and the ones we purged were part of the dependancy chain. For example, if we keep the baselined SU 11.2.1 MU2 as our only update and delete the SU entries for 11.2.0 and 11.2.1, then what would an agent do? Would it break? Would it be stuck at 11.1a forever? We can always hunt down the machine and update them manually rather easily with our upgrade bundle. We just don't want to "break" any agents in the process of freeing up the needed drive space to make room for the next update.

Neophate,

like Craig says, baselining's not been required for a while now, it's
not something you need to worry about

Re: Toggle Ignore in System Update

But we would still like to know how the agent will act and what to expect. Does ignoring a device during the all devices stage make that device ingore that SU forever?

Re: Toggle Ignore in System Update

Let's simplify.
Assuming you have ZCM 10.3.0 or later agents on all PCs.

Then when 11.2.3a ships, install that into the zone and remove all old
System Updates.

When devices check-in, they will be upgraded to 11.2.3a regardless of
where they were in regards to old system update states.
