Versioning in ZCM Satellites

I use to run Nod32. It only kept the latest AV pattern in it's mirror. When Nod updated AV patterns too often, WAN locations with limited bandwidth would go days never getting updated because the patterns would be replaced before the WAN clients could ever download them.

Now I run Symantec Antivirus. I have mirrors (GUPs) at remote sites. Symantec retains the last 3 pattern files, up to 500MB. That way these remote sites don't have the pattern files replaced while updating. They actually update.

What do ZCM Satellites do? I have some satellite servers with only 10kb/s to get their updates. If I increment the version of a zen app, replacing 100MB files in it, what is the affect on the satellite assuming the satellite already had the content?

Re: Versioning in ZCM Satellites

Files will only update if changed.

In fact, Files are never duplicated in the content repo.
So lets say that App1 contains file 123.exe
Then you create App2 that uses an identical file 123.exe and you upload that
to the content repo.
Only a single 123.exe will be stored and no files will need to be downloaded
to the satellite when the new app is built.

Re: Versioning in ZCM Satellites

Ok, that helps with one aspect of it.

So what happens if I increment the version of a bundle, but it takes 3 days for the 100MB to distribute from the ZCM server to the satellite?

More specific. I'm replacing Nod32 with Symantec right now. I rebuilt the ESS setup.exe with some changes. I uploaded the 80MB setup.exe and incremented the version.

The bundle is already associated to workstations at WAN locations with 10kb/s of bandwidth. The bundle has not ran yet on some workstations due to scheduling. Assume ZCM ref occurs prior to distribution. Will the client try to pull the new setup.exe from the satellite and say "could not find content", or will it try to install the old version of the bundle, or will it try to pull setup.exe across the WAN from ZCM, or will it wait until the satellite has the version of the bundle content before deploying?

THANKS!

Re: Versioning in ZCM Satellites

If you change the version number & there are actually new files, it will not
try to install the old version.
It will detect which servers have the current content and select one of
those to use.
I presume your rules will prevent the devices from trying to pull from
across a WAN so it will simply not be available until the content
replicates.

Re: Versioning in ZCM Satellites

Thank you very much. This helps a lot.

No, my rules do not prevent pulling content across the WAN. If the user at the remote site turns off the Satellite server, I don't want ZCM down. So I allow it to come across the WAN.

So what this tells me is that when I increment a new version of the bundle with a large amount of file updates, it is possible that the clients could pull the content from across the WAN instead of the local Satellite since it is only available that way.

What that means is I need to learn remove the associate, increment the version, let the content replicate, then re associate the bundle. This only affects some Bundles. Thanks!
