ZCM treats a renamed AD user as a new local user?

I've tried to find a solution in the KB's but haven't managed. Hope someone can give some good advice...

My problem, as follows.

After renaming a user in our AD, ZCM treats this as a new user when logging in on a client. This leads to uneccessary reinstallations of all bundles that have a InstallOption set to "Install once per user per device".

At ZCM server-level everthing seems fine, the ID-name changes, all bundle-assigments are ok, but locally the client are not aware of the bundles allready being installed.

Is there any way to avoid this?

We're running ZCM 10.2.1 on Win XP clients and W2k3 servers.

Re: ZCM treats a renamed AD user as a new local user?

Bundles can be set to install once per device or once per user.
Generall, the best option is "Once Per Device" since you do not want bundles
reinstalling for each person that logs onto a PC.
This is set under the Options setting in the "Install" and "Launch" tabs.

However, in regards to the behavior you are seeing, this is working as
designed in regards to renaming a user and a bundle is set to install per
user.

In the %program files%\novell\zenworks\cache folder, there are a number of
*.APPState files.
This stores the install state of applications and include the ZCM UserID
that installed the bundle.
I would be possible to script something to Search/Replace in those files.

However, this should not really be necessary since there are likely better
ways to configure your bundles so that you are not reinstalling software per
user.

Re: ZCM treats a renamed AD user as a new local user?

Thanks for quick reply!

If I change InstallOption to "Install per device" I guess I need to increment bundle version to get the change distributed.
This would probably result in an reinstall for the user (?)

We also find that renaming the user in the APPSTATE-files seemed to fix the problem.
That is, until a refresh of Zenworks occur... Then the "old" username appears again like out of the blue.

If I could prevent this from happening I guess the renaming-script would have solved the problem...

Re: ZCM treats a renamed AD user as a new local user?

It may be possible that my "workaround" for the appstate files will not work
if there is data in the local cache ZCM DB.
It's possible that may need to be touched as well.

What I know is based on a related defect.
In short, the "ID" in the "AppState" is "case-sensitive" and that undersome
conditions, the same ZCM ID may be stored in different casing even w/o any
change in the LDAP Source.
This is scheduled to be fixed in 10.2.2 with an updated NWGINA.

There is a seperate ticket open to remove "case-sensitivity" since if an AD
Account was called "bOB" and latter fixed to show "Bob", it should not be
considered a different account.

Re: ZCM treats a renamed AD user as a new local user?

I briefly scanned through the db-files with a SQ-Lite viewer, but didn't see any obvious referrals to my user-id's.
I guess there could be one, but it's not that easy to find.

Thanks for your time so far Craig, if you get any other idées plaese let me know.

If you can't find out more, feel free to harass me here ;>
I've relayed what I know and may fiddle some if necessary when I have a

Re: ZCM treats a renamed AD user as a new local user?

It turned up that our renaming script (replacing old ID with new ID in every .APPSTATE file) simply hadn't finished before the Zenworks services started up.
Thats why the old ID suddenly turned up from nowhere again!

After making sure that the script has run, and tried it on a small test group, it seems that everything runs fine without any unwanted extra "install time" for the users.

Thanks for your support!
