ZESService causing Windows 7 to reboot

Hi,

We have a single server ZCM install, running on SLES. We upgraded from ZCM 10 earlier this week, no problems there. One of our Windows 7 machines has randomly rebooted a couple times this week. When I looked into the event logs, I see that ZESService.exe crashed at the time the reboot happened. Pulling up task manager and killing that process will also cause an immediate reboot. We do not use Endpoint Security, nor do we want it. I don't have the trial installed, but for some reason this is installing when I install the ZCM Agent on Windows 7 machines. I have tested the reboot when killing ZESService.exe on a couple other machines, and it does indeed reboot when ZESService.exe is killed. Is there a way to install the agent on Windows WITHOUT ZESService.exe or any of the Endpoint stuff? Right now I feel like ZCM 11 is a big step backwards.

Re: ZESService causing Windows 7 to reboot

The Reboot may be due to some ZESM Self-Defense Mechanism, I'm not sure.
However, There is an updated version of the ZESM component via an SR>

Re: ZESService causing Windows 7 to reboot

Thanks Craig. Is there any way to install the Windows agent WITHOUT the ZESM stuff? We don't have endpoint security installed, not even the trial. I would rather not even have those components installed on the clients.

Re: ZESService causing Windows 7 to reboot

If you go to configuration > Device Management > Zenworks Agent
You can there choose which components of the adaptive agent will be installed
The choice for zesm:
Endpoint Security Management Installed Enabled Disabled
So set it on "Disabled" and turn off the checkbox for "Installed".

Then the complete component will be uninstalled by all your clients.
You can test that on 1 device if you override the default agent settings for that device.

Re: ZESService causing Windows 7 to reboot

Must be something wrong with my ZCM install, I don't have that option. I have:

Bundle Management
Policy Management
User Management
Remote Management
Image Management

Re: ZESService causing Windows 7 to reboot

Most of the ZESM Services will always be installed since they are used
for Location Services.

Re: ZESService causing Windows 7 to reboot

Mbrady,

What did you choose on the instalation of zcm11?
have you select the ZESM evaluation or did you put in the product-code , or did you deselect the option.

I deselected it. I only had ZCM, I deselected everything else.

Re: ZESService causing Windows 7 to reboot

Hi,

Just stumbled across this thread. I have exactly the same problem except I might want the ZESM. It is currently in evaluation mode..... would that cause this problem.

I have a fresh SLES11 with ZCM11 installed. My Win7 pc's reboot randomly. I check the event log and basically it says ZESSerive gets an error and then it reboots the pc. I check the actual service and the recovery option for a fail is to restart the pc. I can change it to restart the app but after a reboot its changed back to restart the pc.

My agent version for ZESM is: 11.0.0.40276.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards
Warren

Re: ZESService causing Windows 7 to reboot

I opened an SR. The person I spoke with said there was not any agent patches. But, she did get a workaround setup for me that resulted in ZESM being turned off on the workstations. That's what I was after. She is working on a TID, I will post the link as soon as I see it.

Re: ZESService causing Windows 7 to reboot

Got the SR? I will have them send u the patches.
Disabling ZESM will break some ZCM 11 features.
