Zenworks server upgrade failure

Hi All,
I have been attempting to upgrade an 11.2.00 zenworks appliance to 11.3. And it has failed on 3 attempts.
As we want to move to 11.4.
I thinking it may be easier to build a new appliance based on 11.4 rather than attempt the upgrade again.
If I deploy the 11.4 appliance , will the existing 11.2 clients be able to connect?
And will the clients be able to upgrade to the latest client version?
Is there away to copy data from the existing 11.2 database?

Thanx

Julian

Re: Zenworks server upgrade failure

What happens when you try? Any errors? Can you open an SR?

I do not know whether that old a client can connect, but let me check.

If you indeed want to start over, then you can export bundles and then
import into the new appliance. I have done that once for a client where
an appliance crashed and there were no backups.

Re: Zenworks server upgrade failure

Hi Anders,
One install failed with serious errors - didn't have time to check and restored from backup.
The other install just got stuck for 2 days with no movement on the progress bars. No error given.
Is there documentation on exporting the bundles?
If the export of bundles work then I only need to be able to update the clients adaptive agents.
If the adaptive agents can't be updated automatically, the new version of the agent should able to be installed over the top manually if required?

Thanx

https://www.novell.com/documentation/zenworks114/readme_zenworks114/data/readme_zenworks114.html
10.3.4 onwards... For the client update.

If the zone is new, then it will probably not help, even if it had worked as the clients will not trust it.

The bundle export is documented:
http://www.novell.com/documentation/zenworks113/zen11_utils/data/b74pt40.html#b8an1xx

Note that you need the -c option for content.

Re: Zenworks server upgrade failure

Hi Anders,
Thanx for the information.
If the zone is new and has the same details as the existing zone. If the clients are manually updated using the newer agent would they then be able to communicate to the new server properly?

Thanx

Only if the new zone has the same certificate as the old one. Otherwise
clients will not trust the server.

Re: Zenworks server upgrade failure

Hi Andres,
Can the new agent be installed over the top of the old agent, as the new zone would have a different certificate and the new agent would be downloaded from the new zone.
Or does the old agent need to be completely removed first.

Thanx

Cannot remember. IIRC will you have to visit every workstation. How many
are there?

Re: Zenworks server upgrade failure

You cannot simply setup a new zone with the same name and details and have it really be the same zone.
Open an SR if possible.

A little complex, but you could........
Install a Non-Appliance Server to the zone.
Retire the Appliance.
Upgrade Non-Appliance Server to 11.3 and then 11.4
If you only want appliance, then you could add an 11.4 appliance and retire the non-appliance.
Note: ZCM 11.4.x Appliances are far easier to upgrade due to significant changes to Appliance Design.

Re: Zenworks server upgrade failure

Hi Craig,
Could I setup another 11.2 appliance into the zone, retire the existing appliance.
Upgrade the new appliance to 11.3 then 11.4
or is there a limited number of appliances allowed?

Thanx
