cdc_ether USB NIC doesn't get IP address with May imgupdate

Last week I went from 11.4.1 to 11.4.2 and then put the May 16 imaging update on. We have HP Streams (with the HP USB NIC) and I was excited because the eMMC drives should now be supported in the latest updates/SLES 12 (the USB NIC did work before 11.4.2). Well, I think the eMMC drive is working, but now the NIC isn't pulling an IP address after it gets past the PXE boot. I opened SR 101012010341 but haven't got much traction on it.

I can boot to the CD imaging menu and tried entering newid="0x0bda 0x8153,cdc_ether" before entering maintenance mode. I got those values from https://www.novell.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=3421576, using hwinfo --netcard, and it is using the Realtek USB 10/100/1000 LAN vendor/device under USB, and "driver status: cdc_ether is active". But ifconfig still shows no IP address other than loopback, so it won't pull the image from the proxy server.

Is there anything more I can do to make this work?

TIA,
Michelle

Re: cdc_ether USB NIC doesn't get IP address with May imgupd

Have you heard anything back on your SR. We have the same problem with the HP Stream and HP USB dongle using the May driver update. We'd love to get it to work, but in the meantime we've been using an adapter from Cable 2 Go model 39700 that works without any problems. That still leaves us with 80 non-working HP adapters. BTW, this is for the Stream 2. We've been using the StarTech USB21000S2 on the first generation HP Stream.

Novell is looking at the issue.
The Devices appear to work under SLES 11 SP3, but are not working at this point with SLES 12 SP1.

Officially HP does not support these Dongles under Linux and they were simply working using a more Generic Driver not an actual HP Driver designed for these.

More should be known in a few days.
If you have an SR yourself, you can post it here and can be added into the loop for any fixes if they become available.

Re: cdc_ether USB NIC doesn't get IP address with May imgupd

As Craig said, they're working on it with the HP USB NIC, but I did find that the PlugAble USB NIC 9www.plugable.com/products/usb3-e1000 has Linux drivers and works with the current Imaging Update files if I use the newid= command (newid="0x0b95 0x1790,ax88179_178a" for that PlugAble USB NIC). Eventually, hopefully, the HP USB NIC should work with SLES 12 I would think.

Re: cdc_ether USB NIC doesn't get IP address with May imgupd

Any news/movement on this?
We're seeing the same issue with Dell FM76N USB Ethernet adapter, which appears to be same chipset as the above mentioned HP dongle
(Vendor 0x0bda; Device 0x8153)

We've just updated to May16 (sles12sp1) imaging update from Dec15 (sles11sp3) where it did work (as stated above)

We can open SR and try and link through.... However would appreciate any updates?

Cheers

Does Dell Provide any Linux Drivers for that NIC.
cdc_ether is just a default driver for when no driver exists.

Re: cdc_ether USB NIC doesn't get IP address with May imgupd

The hardware is reported as "Realtek RTL8153 USB Ethernet Controller (xHCI) v1.02 (06/07/14)"
It appears to be same chipset as the above mentioned HP dongle (Vendor 0x0bda; Device 0x8153)

Apparently the r8152 driver is for Realtek R8152/R8153 based USB ethernet adapters

I have "SR 101023290661 +EO Re: ZCM May16 Driver Update and Dell FM76N USB Ethernet adapter" open on this, but it's gone very quiet after a couple of attempts with "patched" initrd's...

I'd be grateful if anyone could give that SR a poke....

Cheers

Re: cdc_ether USB NIC doesn't get IP address with May imgupd

Development has opened a ticket with Suse....
But keep in mind the Vendor has specifically lists supported OSes and no version of Linux is listed.
So there can be no assurances of any fix.

It is up to the Hardware Vendors to Create the Drivers.
In the past by mere chance a generic "ethernet" driver worked, not a realtek driver.

The odds of Suse making it work are minimal without vendor support for Linux.
