3rd party ldap client and vendorName eDirectory 8.8. SP8

Netiq eDirectory 8.8 SP8 / RedHat Linux Enterprise server

We have a 3rd party application which uses our eDirectory as its ldap
repository for user authentication and authorization. After upgrading
our old eDirectory form 8.8. Sp2 to 8.8 Sp8 the 3rd party
application has stopped working. So far i have done some debug on this
case and done some ldap tracing on the queries that are coming from the
application. what i see is after asking vendorName the ldap quires
changes its behavior.

I have done some comparison of the rootDSE of the both eDirectory
versions and found something interesting:

on old eDirectoryServer we have vendorName with value 'Novell, Inc.'
and on the new eDirectory server we have vendorName with value "NetIQ
Corporation".

Could it be causing our 3rd party application?.. or is it a known bug
and if there is any hot fix to it that we can try?

Regards,
M.

Re: 3rd party ldap client and vendorName eDirectory 8.8. SP8

Yes, that's possible depending on how the application is coded. Generally
if the application is just expecting an LDAP application it should work,
but if it is checking the vendor and then failing without any actual
checks of the compatibility then that would make sense.

Related to this if you check TID# 3426981 you'll see this as part of the
patch for 8.8 SP8 Patch 2 which you may not have applied yet, but should:

SMS - TSANDS rebranding change affected 3rd party backup applications
(Bug 870298)

Hm. Well, eDirectory is a NetIQ product now, and I guess they re-branded
it from the "Novell" name. I'm somewhat surprised that an application is
actually looking at vendorName and failing, but I guess it's possible.
You'll have to contact the vender to ask them to fix their code.

Re: 3rd party ldap client and vendorName eDirectory 8.8. SP8

We found that out. it was some bug on the application side which was
taking eDirectory as Active Directory as ldap servers. Setting some
parameter on the client side resolved the error. Through we applied the
hot-fix but no difference before trying the settings
on the application side.
