Cannot add server to Tree - eDirectory 9.1

Hi All,

I am having some trouble getting a server installed into an existing tree. I am using eDirectory 9.1.
The installation of eDirectory went fine with no errors.

I get the following message when trying to add the server to the existing tree using ndsconfig.

Current env file will be backed-up in format env.current_date, any customizations done to env file need to be copied back to new env file from backed-up file.
Starting the service 'ndsd'... Error: Cannot start 'ndsd', start manually.

ERROR: ./ndsconfig return value = 10.

I found the following TID https://support.microfocus.com/kb/doc.php?id=7022449 but it didnt fix the issue.

The LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable is set as are the other variables it asked to be set when first installing eDirectory.

Server OS is SLES 12 SP3 and am performing a root install.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers
Mat

Could you show us the ndsconfig command you are using, preferably with as
little redacted as possible?

Are you on eDirectory 9.1 SP3? If not, get there before wasting time on
9.1 (SP0) since that will get you current fixes which may just clera
things up.

Re: Cannot add server to Tree - eDirectory 9.1

Yeah sure its ./ndsconfig add -t TREENAME -S server02name -p server01ipaddr

It is just 9.1 no service pack as the other server is the same version and same install media.

Don't use dot-slash before the command; the one you want SHOULD be in your
path, e.g. /opt/novell/eDirectory/bin/ndsconfig (or something like that).
I've seen a few times where somebody was doing './ndsconfig' because they
were trying to use an ndsconfig command that happened to come with the
install media, and that is never correct.

Also, 'server01' is a nice name, but at the very least you should have
something DNS-complete in there (server01.domain.tld) or, better yet, an
IP address of that (presumably) Master of [root].

Also, I do not see a few other fields I would expect, like the context
where your server will go in the tree when it is added, or the location of
the configuration file, or the LDAP or NCP or iMonitor/DHost ports, or the
data directory, or the dib directory. I've always specified all of those,
and using ndsmanage instead of ndsconfig can help with those, but then you
need to show a lot more output because ndsmanage generates the huge
ndsconfig command for you behind the scenes without actually showing it to
you. Perhaps you could use ndsmanage, but then when ndsconfig is called
behind the scenes you can capture that command via another terminal/shell:

ps aux | grep ndsconfig

I'd still patch; install issues can be fixed, and the 9.1.0 and 9.1.3
versions will work fine together.

Re: Cannot add server to Tree - eDirectory 9.1

Simply removing the ./ has fixed the issue. Feel a bit silly not trying that in the first place 😮

I appreciate your help

I'm glad to hear it. Thanks for sharing your results, as they will likely
help others (you weren't the first, so you likely will not be the last).
