No change in eDirectory sync after removing r/w replica

Hi,

We have removed one of the eDirectory server(read/write) from replica
ring using iManager replica view option. After removing we have verified
the sync by updating an object from Primary server and we could see that
still the data is getting sync. Please help us to remove the r/w server
from the tree.
eDirectory versions:
Primary server: 8.8 SP8 (20808.06)
Server: Windows 2012 R2

Thanks
Siva ram T

The documentation covers how to remove a server from the tree. The
easiest way is to just power off the box, be sure it NEVER turns back on
(wipe it), and then delete the server object (objectClass=NCP Server) for
that particular server from the tree.

If you have removed a replica, then the objects in that replica no longer
exist on the server you removed the replica from. But I do not understand
what you mean when you say that "we could see that still the data is
getting sync". What, exactly, are you doing? How, exactly, are you seeing
this?

Re: No change in eDirectory sync after removing r/w replica

We are expecting that the objects in the replica to be removed
automatically after removing the from the replica. But still we are able
to see the objects and also they are getting sync when changed from
Master.

Re: No change in eDirectory sync after removing r/w replica

Servers without replicas still answer requests as if they did by walking
the tree to replica-holders. They will not have actual objects within
them, so if all replica-holders turn off, they will similarly be useless,
but in the meantime they do not leave clients hanging assuming they can
find the objects that clients need.

In other words, your conclusion that non-replica-holders have objects is
being reached incorrectly; they do hold data in memory while relaying from
a real replica-holder to the client, but they do not store them
permanently in their filesystem like replica-holders.

I don't think you're seeing what you think you're seeing, so I'll ask
again. How *exactly* are you seeing this? What tool(s) are you using?

Re: No change in eDirectory sync after removing r/w replica

Removing of a replica only removes that portion of the dB from that
particular server.

Using an ldap browser and asking that server, without the dB, you will
still get the users because the server will go and ask the other servers
for that information.

What did you want to accomplish with the removal?
I think you want to do something else because this is working as it
should.

Re: No change in eDirectory sync after removing r/w replica

We need to decommission the server because we have installed IDM4.5.3 in
new server. So as part of decommission we need to remove the old
eDir/IDV server from the treee.

Can you please provide any documentation link to do the same.

Thanks

https://www.netiq.com/documentation/edir88/edirin88/data/bnn8twh.html

Using the steps mentioned previously would be faster, but either way
should work.

You should probably start a new thread as this is a new issue.

Be sure to include what you mean by "not connecting". Since you removed
the other server in the tree, the new server has nothing to which it
should connect (unless there are other servers besides these two) so a lot
more explanation of what you expect, what you see, and how you see it
should be included.

Not connecting to (or from) what? What messages are you receiving?

Re: No change in eDirectory sync after removing r/w replica

I tried to connect the eDirectory using LDAP browser and iManager. From
LDAP browser it throws com error. From iManager it is keep trying to
login and no response. I could see the NDS agent is closed and it is not
starting up.But eDirectory service x64NDSServer is running. Can you
please guide on what to do to bring up the eDirectory.

Thanks

I don't have a Windows box handy to check at the moment, but there should
be an ndsd.log in or under c:\novell. What messages are being reported in
there?
