Opinions wanted on iManager server platform

Does anyone have an opinion on whether to run iManager server on Windows
vs Linux? I'm just curious if it's just personal preference or if
there's actually a benefit to using one over the other.

In case it's not clear, I have a bias towards the best possible
platforms for specific tasks; that will come out below.

Some plugins require being used on the actual platform where services
are implemented... such as iPrint on OES or something so keep that in
mind. I don't know of any plugins that require windows like the ones
for OES do on Linux and NetWare, though.

Otherwise, iManager doesn't exactly do much in the disk so while NTFS is
the world's slowest filesystem it probably won't hurt you as much here
as it does with things like eDirectory where disk reading/writing matters.

- From a security standpoint I think iManager on windows has tomcat run as
system which is never a good idea, but that's the way windows installs
work. It's fine as long as nothing gets compromised (Tomcat has bugs
once in a while) at which point your entire server is lost; Tomcat on
Linux runs as a regular old dumb user, of course, so no worries there of
losing your entire server.

With that said, I do almost all of my work these days using iManager
Workstation because it's always there (no matter where I am) and it's
easier to backup/restore/fix when needed (just backup the directory
where it's extracted, or restore that directory from a backup).

Good luck.

Re: Opinions wanted on iManager server platform

Thanks for the thoughts. I'd probably prefer to use iManager
workstation too, but it's easier to host it so that our help desk has a
web interface that we can manage centrally.
