eDirectory 9.0.2 is not starting after upgrade

Hi,

We have current environment IDM 4.5.2 with eDirectory 8.8.8 patch 8. Aim is to upgrade to IDM 4.5.5 with eDirectory 9.0.2 and then IDM 4.6

After applying 4.5.5 engine service pack and idm45_eDir90_compat i upgraded edirectory to 9.0.2. After upgrading ndsd is not starting instance.

below are some output of command i am getting.

This is a clustered environment and other copy of this is running in Hostname0 server with no issues having eDirectory 8.8.8 patch 8.
I have tried to set ndspath which didn't help me.

Please help me to fix this

Thanks

As a reminder from the thread in the IDM forum before you moved it here,
running 'ndsd' this way it not valid and should never be done as it can
cause problems with duplicate processes, which may explain some of the
errors reported over there. Use 'ndsstat' to get instance information, or
just query the RPM database for versions of packages, e.g.:

rpm -qa | grep NDSserv

The first command (ndsmanage) was the right way to do this; the 'ndsd
start' portion is never right; please never use it or you will just break
your system.

Yes, ndsstat does not provide great information when the eDirectory
instance is not running, but the 'rpm' command mentioned above should
work. This is an okay command to run in general, though.

You mentioned the "clustered environment" bit in the other forum, but all
of the details you have provided indicate that this is not a "cluster" in
any special case, but rather a standard eDirectory environment which
replicates data and, thus, is a form of fault-tolerant (vs. failover)
cluster. As a result, I would either verify what the person who set this
up meant when they said it was "clustered", or else clarify that this is
just a standard setup. "clustered" in the eDriectory sent, beyond what is
done out of the box, usually means you have two hosts with shared storage
and only one of them runs the eDirectory instance at a time. This does
not seem to be your case.

Considering your error I would probably get the eDirectory 9.0 SP3 media
and try the install/upgrade again. The output from that may give us
better information on what is happening. Perhaps NICI did not install
properly, or perhaps there was a package conflict that caused the install
to exit prematurely which was not noticed, so now you are in a
half-upgraded state. Either way, that may be faster to resolve than the
alternative.

Re: eDirectory 9.0.2 is not starting after upgrade

Hi ab,

#Sorry I am not able to send PM. I have tried couple of time.

#I got this resolved. novell-ncpenc-1.3.1-0.x86_64.rpm was missing and by installing this manually fixed issue.

#Thank you very much for your help.

I have one more issue. We have another setup where we have only eDirectory 8.8 SP8 installed. When i am trying to upgrade that eDirectory i am getting below error.

%%% ERROR : The current NetIQ Identity Manager installation or its components are not compatible with NetIQ eDirectory 9.0.2. Install the latest version of NetIQ Identity Manager that is compatible with NetIQ eDirectory 9.0.2

Do i have to install idm45_eDir90_compat from IDM_engine_rl_IDM4.5.5.zip
installed then try to upgrade ?? I am thinking if why to install this package as we don't have identity manager installed in this server.

Let me know if there is some other way to fix this ??

Thanks

Re: eDirectory 9.0.2 is not starting after upgrade

I heard back that the problem went back to ncpenc being missing. However
that was found, or why it was ever missing I do not know, but it's worth
checking if others hit this kind of issue.
