errno 88
NOES11SP2
eDir 8.8 SP8
NDS log showed a 'errno 88 returned as -255' during non=production hours. In
the morning all users could log into the system, however their drive
mappings were absent. Site restarted the server to regain functionality.
Does anyone know what the errno 88 is indicating?
In advance, thanks.

Please show us the error message in the log with the context of what's in
it. What log file is this showing in?

Do you have another LDAP server running on this system? It looks like
there's something else using those ports (that shouldn't, to my
knowledge, cause this error, but if there's some other related conflict,
it'd be good to eliminate that from the picture).

Re: errno 88
Thanks for the response.
Only the single instance of NDS LDAP on this server. It is supporting
iPrint, but that is not related. So you are saying that ports 389 or 636
have been conflicted with?

Your logs say that the ports are unavailable:
---
Dec 04 08:09:05 Listener cleartext port 389 is already in use
Dec 04 08:09:05 Listener TLS port 636 is already in use
---
That shouldn't cause any problems, unless you're using LDAP for anything.
Do you see any issues in the running server - any symptoms that you're
trying to diagnose that might be related to this error?
I'm thinking it might just be related to the dxevent warning, which I
think is related to IDM (and if you're not using IDM, then that's not a
problem, as I recall - maybe David or ab can confirm?)

Agreed.

Confirmed; this shows up all of the time and means nothing (in most cases)
unless IDM should be running. Every non-IDM eDir box I've seen does this
on every startup.... should just be a warning or described better in the
log, but oh well.

Re: errno 88
NETSTAT results are below. The server is also running NSM 4.0 event monitor
which shows in the NETSTAT for port 389. All else is NDSD and NAMCD which I
believe are expected.
Any other ideas?

believe are expected.

That should be, yes.
So back to my other question, then, is what effects in the eDir
environment you're seeing that you think this particular error in the log
relates to? Are you having issues with authentication, replication, or
something else?

Re: errno 88
eDir crashes......and users cannot login. Restart NDS, and all is well.
Today I ran a NDS health check and found several stuck obits in two
partitions. Cleaned those up, and now I have several pugeable obits that are
stuck. Working on that. I do not think that is the actual NDS crash cause,
however I prefer that eDir be clean before moving forward.

Probably the thing to do in this instance is to get a core dump of the
crash and get someone at NetIQ to diagnose the crash - I have a feeling
that this is a distraction from the underlying issue.

Re: errno 88
That sounds correct. At least now all of those obits and backlins are
cleared up. Waiting for the next crash.
Thanks,

Well it crashed again this morning. Same error message in the log. Must have
been a Christmas present. Next is to update NDS on the server.
