ndsconfig add command successful but no partition is added !

Hello,

I have a replica ring (3 Windows 2003 SP1, eDirectory 8.7.3.10 FTF 2)
the latest patch is applied the replica ring is healthy an no error is
shown in dstrace

On a SLES 11 SP2 64 bits I have installed and eDirectory 8.8.7 , and
launched the command, below

ndsconfig add -t TREEE -n "ou=servers.o=services" -a
"cn=admin.ou=users.o=services" -p "192.168.23.160"

Every thing is OK, no error has been seen on the operations , but no
replica is created on the Linux Server

I have never seen that before ! I am totally lost, please help

please see the log on the below links

http://pastebin.com/exNtLy4u

ndsd.log does not show any thing suspicious

Rcndsd status gives

sles11sp2novo~ # rcndsd status
Tree Name: TREEEE
Server Name: .CN=sles11sp2novo.OU=servers.O=services.T=TREEEE.
Binary Version: 20701.48
Root Most Entry Depth: -1
Product Version: eDirectory for Linux x86_64 v8.8 SP7 [DS]

ndsrepair -P -Ad gives

Replicas are auto-added to the first three servers to be added to a tree.
After that, you're on your own to create partitions and add or remove
replicas to meet your needs.

Did you read the message that you pasted? This can be normal:

<quote>
This is a normal occurrence when replica distribution of partitions in a
directory services tree does not place any replicas on a server
</quote>

The documentation talks about this feature, but eDirectory will (by
default) add a replica of the partition into which the server is
installed IF there are not already three replicas of that partition in
the tree. If you want more you can always add them using iManager or
ConsoleOne and the 'Partitions and Replicas' role.

Adding replicas to every server would be really foolish in an
environment with a bunch of servers because it would just make
replication a nightmare; some competing products are foolish and do
that, but eDirectory is not, and instead lets you apply more than three
replicas as appropriate for the design of your tree when you know it is
a worthwhile endeavor (such as when located across WAN links, or when
put on a server that will be accessing them often, etc.).

Good luck.

Re: ndsconfig add command successful but no partition is added !

Aron, David thanks a lot for helping me

I have read on the logs that this may be normal, but it was doubtful for
me, so I wanted the opinion of the experts

That's true I have three replicas of each partition on the tree, but why
[ROOT] is not automatically added and the inner partitions as subref ?

I am used to add servers to replica rings and the [ROOT] was always
added automatically, and the inner partitions as subref.

Could you give me the links talking about this feature ?

Regards

Only the partition the server is installed in is automatically added, and
then only if there are fewer than three replicas.

[Root] is never added automatically unless the server is installed in the
root partition and there are fewer than 3 replicas. It's always been
this way (since eDirectory was NetWare Directory Services as shipped on
NetWare 4.0).

Subrefs are only added when a parent partition is replicated to the new
server and child partitions are not. Again, that's standard behaviour,
and only when the parent partition has fewer than 3 replicas at
installation time. Otherwise, nothing is added during installation.

When adding a server, for the partition it's added to, if there are fewer
than three replicas of that partition, then a replica is added to the
server.

For child partitions of that partition, the result would be subrefs added
as well.

Re: ndsconfig add command successful but no partition is added !

Thanks a lot,

I did notice that if I add to the newly installed server replicas form
the inner partition to [ROOT] via iManager, ( I mean child partitions
first, [ROOT] is last ) the ndsd service crash while adding [ROOT] and a
core file is produced !

Any Idea ? may be a lot of partitions (4 partitions ) is causing that ?

How to investigate the cause of server crash after adding partitions ?
as ndsd.log is not showing any thing

Regards

Unrelated issue; Crashes should never happen, and four replicas is
nowhere near 'a lot of [replicas]' so this is unrelated to the rest of
your thread, and maybe a bug in eDirectory. Start a new thread
explaining exactly how you caused the crash and maybe we can get
somewhere with that, though reading those usually requires Novell/NetIQ
engineering.

Good luck.
