3.0 Print Portal

Just installed the new appliance version, the print portal gives us something we've wanted for a long time, a way to control what printers a use can see.

In saying that, it appears you can't use the install button for a printer unless you are sign in to the portal, for secured printers anyway. However in a byod scenario this means a double login, first to the portal and then to the iprint client.

Can the install button be enabled for secured printers shown to the public portal? Is this an option or a feature request?

Thanks

Re: 3.0 Print Portal

The purpose of the portal is to only show users the printers that they have access to. That way user's don't get an "unauthorized" error when they click on something that they are not allowed to use. This was the problem with the old /ipp page. You're basically asking to break the primary reason the portal was created.

For Public printers, those for which there are no restrictions, users can just click and install without any restrictions.

For printers which are secure, the user must log in first, before installing, to ensure that they are allowed to use them. Even the /ipp page (which is still there BTW), will ask you to authenticate before installing a secure printer.

Re: 3.0 Print Portal

Hi Lothar,

Thanks for the reply, makes sense to prevent the client having to handle the no access issue, however we do byod for our students and in this scenario it means the student has to sign in twice to be able to install a printer, once to print portal and another with the client. While a student can save their password in the client, this doesn't help on the first time and since we only present one queue to the student it is the only time they're expected to have to access it, so making this as smooth as possible is a big thing for us.

We have a global print queue set for find me printer via papercut, so we need to have it secured to know which user sent the job.

An option of "Allow unauthenticated install button" would solve this, have a note for admin advising to only use when they have all users assigned to the printer should be sufficient
