DOS printing w/iPrint v4.05 - stops working

We're still have a few DOS applications and users who do alot of work in
DOS (w/i Win XP). We installed iPrint v4.05 on the pc's, all Win XP,
either SP1 or SP2. We used iCapture to capture to a networked printer.
On the server we're running NW 6.5 SP3.

This seems to work sometimes - then randomly stops working on various
pc's. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason. iCapture shows the
captured printer - but print jobs from DOS hang the applications.

We've found that by selecting the printer, going to properties, and
doing a "print test page" - temporarily fixes the issue on the pc.
After that we can print from DOS again. We can print Windows apps just
fine.

We have 20+ networked HP printers. Last week I moved all of them from
the HP gateway to the Novell gateway, after learning the HP gateway was
no longer supported. Printing from DOS is still iffy.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

Re: DOS printing w/iPrint v4.05 - stops working

Do you have a Novell client on these workstations? If yes, you can just
create print queues for the DOS printers and make NDPS/iPrint service
the queues.

DOS printing w/iPrint v4.05 - stops working

Interesting.. The iPrint capture actually "spools" if you will the print
jobs to the C:\ndps\dosbox\lpt_1 thru lpt_9 directories, depending on
what is captured. The job basically sits there and process monitors
files in these directories, pulls them out and sends them to the iPrint
printer via the iPrint Client and the ipp protocol. So my question would
be, when the capture "stops", is the job "queued" up? IE. is there a
job in one of the directories ready to be sent? OR is there nothing,
in which case the capture failed to write the data to the directory for
some reason??

Re: DOS printing w/iPrint v4.05 - stops working

yes, we have the novell client (4.90sp? or 4.91) on these pc's. we've
been using print queues for years, and finally retired the server
holding the queues. we switched to iPrint/iCapture to replace the print
queues.

i'll keep this as an option for resolving the issue.
