Help with creating NDPS printers

Can anyone help me on creating NDPS printers in NW 6.5. I have a broker and
a manager up. I just found out that I should not be creating printers using
HP IP/IPX printer gateway b/c they discontuned the product and now should be
using Novell Printer Gateway (SNMP). I setup one printer using HP gateway
and it was working fine. I' deleted the printer and created a printer using
Novell Gateway after I click ok (when I create the printer agent) the next
box (Printer Type and Port Handle type is blank and I can't do anything. I
have to ctrl-alt-delete to get out of NWAdmin. I'm sure I'm doing something
wrong. Need help. John

Re: Help with creating NDPS printers

Hi John,

How did you delete the printer, in NWadmin or in the server console NDPSM
screen ?.
When deleting from NWadmin you change the printer from Controlled access to
Public access.
Check the NDPSM screen and the hpgate screen to see if it still exists.

BTW deleting/recreating is not necessary. Use this tool instead:

Re: Help with creating NDPS printers

Peter,

I was able to delete the printer in NWadmin and remove the printer within
the manager that made it public. I do not have any issue's creating
printers using HP IP/IPX gateway. But when I try to create a printer
using Novell Gateway. I am able to create the printer name, choose the
Novell gateway click the button and the next screen is blank and I can't
do anything. At this point I hit ctrl-alt-delete to get out of nwadmin.

I guess right now I can create all the printers using HP Gateway and use
the tool to move them to Novell Gateway. Have you heard of my problem
above? Do I have the ability to create the printers using Novell Gateway?

I did manage a server 5.0 and 5.1 with NDPS. This was a great product for
printing. Is NW 6.5 different with NDPS? I know that all the
documentation in 6.5 they talk about iprint. Do you know anything about
this? I guess my ultimite goal is just to ease the administration of
printing. And to push out the printers to the users.

Thanks

John

Re: Help with creating NDPS printers

iPrint is just a mechanism that is put in place that gives the clients a
different way to access printers. The server is still NDPS. Enabling
iPrint requires "flipping" a flag to indicate the printer also supports
iPrint clients. Most of the Management of iPrint is done with iManager,
however, NWAdmin does have the ability to manage to an extent. In
NWAdmin, printers created ARE NOT iPrint enabled by default, whereas
iManager enables printers for iPrint by default..

Also, NWAdmin does NOT support adding drivers for Windows XP and Linux,
Printer Driver Profiles, etc. the list goes on. Plus, with iManager,
you don't necessarily need client 32 to manage printing..

I have not heard of problems you have described with NWAdmin, you should
be able to create just fine. I would check the version of CLIENT 32. Do
you have NDPS support installed with the client???

Re: Help with creating NDPS printers

Peter,

Yes, I have client 4.91 SP1 installed. I do not know the mystery problem
that I'm having. The weird thing is that I can create a printer using any
other gateway besides novell. HP, xerox and whatever other gateway are
showing up in the box. If I use that tool, I wonder will the printers move
over to Novell Gateway. I'll try that this morning. I have not configured
imanage on the server do you recommend installing? Does it require a lot of
configuration. I did look at the documentation, it seems fairly straight
forward. I do not want to install if I don't need to. I just want to create
printers and push them out to the users. Any other suggestions?

John
