Multi-port print server and iPrint Linux

Just installed OES Linux and iPrint on a new HP ML 350 and am creating
printers on it. Two of our printers are on the same 3-port HP print server.
iPrint on NetWare handled this OK, but so far I haven't been able to get
anything to work on any port but 1 with Linux iPrint. Novell's KB has one
(count 'em: 1) TID relating to multi-port printers and it is two years old
and not pertinent. The Linux iPrint doc just says "Follow the prompts and
fill in the fields." There's no field for port number.

Re: Multi-port print server and iPrint Linux

I'm suprised you got it to work with NetWare (unless you used the HP
gateway), because there is not really anythign different between NetWare
and Linux when it comes to multi port print servers.
What you simply have to know is that there is no additional port
paramater. Instead, the different port use different LPR names (for LPR
printing) or port numbers for port 9100 printing.
Just like the normal LPR names, the actual naming convension is
manufacturer specific.
In the case of HP, the configuration information is the following:

- Single port print server:
LPR name to use : raw
port "9100" number to use: 9100

- Multi port print server:
LPR namke to use:
port 1 : raw or raw1
port 2 : raw2
port 3 : raw3
...

Port "9100" numbers to use:
port 1 : 9100
port 2 : 9101
port 3 : 9102
...

All this is actually documented in the following TID:

Look under "HP JetDirect Server (External)"

Well, yeah, with HP JetDirect stuff.

Port 9101 worked! Thanks.

Thanks for this info. For some reason, I searched for "multi-port",
thinking, in my confusion, that the pertinent information would contain
that word in it, since, after all, it applies to multi-port print servers.
I guess I'm just a slow learner.
