OS update necessary / possible

I'm evaluating the iPrint Appliance V2. Must I update the SLES OS?

Re: OS update necessary / possible

Hi Hagen
No, the appliance is exactly that - an appliance. There are patches that become available from time to time but they are applied via the appliances own patch mechanism through the web interface.

Re: OS update necessary / possible

Yesterday at Micro Focus TechUpdate in Berlin we had the same question with ZENworks Appliance. We heard from Thomas, that Micro Focus works and tests at this time OS Patches for appliances. In principle you are right, Lothar, with the patch mechanism. But if there are OS security problems, they must patch the OS beside this mechanism.

Currently the various appliances do not subscribe to the relevant
online patch channels for the underlying OS so they'll only pick
up patches provided via the appliance update mechanism (as Lothar
indicated).

Whilst some solutions are only available as appliances, the iPrint
Appliance being one, other products such as ZENworks
Configuration Management can (currently) also be installed on an
OS you administer and manage thus giving you more control over
security updates.
