Re: NDPS & Large Print Jobs

Same problem here....
OK..use the Novell Gateway.....but I was benefitting from using IPX by
not having to worry about security on the printer.

If I run IP on the printer, I will have to painstakingly setup IP
security on the printer (and all the other 4000/4050s in the college)
so that students won't print directly (and if they can, they will)
thereby bypassing the NDPS Printer (with PCounter accounting)

What are my options?

Unfortunately, yes. But IPX should work, really.

Re: NDPS & Large Print Jobs

IPX does work except for the "large print job/4000-4050" scenario
(this doesn't happen on our 4100 or 4200)
we are extensively testing this as we e-speak
I've got the internal JetDirect patched to the latest
The Printer Firmware is a physical chip (not a file)..so we're trying to
locate it.
We've filled the printer's memory banks to capacity

Can I use the Novell Printer Gateway to talk IPX directly to the printer?

Kirk

Re: NDPS & Large Print Jobs

What's happening is this...
we have a 2.7 Meg (16 page) pdf file
When I send it to the 4200....the print job size reported by NDPS
increases to 3.6Meg
and prints normally
When I send the same file to the 4050...the print job size reported by
NDPS increases to 18 Meg (and we know we're going to have problems)
If we send 2-3 pages (of the 16 page) to the 4050...it prints alright.

Where is all this padding coming from?
We've tried all 4000/4050 drivers PCL5 PCL6

No idea, but it would be really interesting to see the actual job. BTW
are you using PS or PCL?

Re: NDPS & Large Print Jobs

Our standard is PS
but we've trie PCL PCL5 PCL6
we've even tried a 4200 driver on the 4050 printer

Tomorrow..I will retry the legacy queue to observe
the printjob padding phenomena

Re: NDPS & Large Print Jobs

Well we've tried everything...and I'm sure there's some stuff we left out.
Our test file is a 16 page pdf it will print in the following cases
to a 4100 and up via HP ip/ipx NDPS Gateway
to a 4100 and up via HP ip/ipx NDPS Gateway w Printer agent set to lpr
to a 4100 from a MAC using Appletalk or the NDPS PA(lpr enabled)
to a 4000 from a MAC using OSX native pdf viewer PREVIEW.....
but NOT from ADOBE ACROBAT reader or professional (go figure!!)

It will not print to a 4000 or 4050 at all
We tried Windows Standard IP direct

Our MAC guy has a legacy utility that can switch the 4000/4050's
emulation mode from Auto to PS or PCL...we tried all three....to no avail

If I had but 2-3 of these...I'd give them away...but I have about
35 on the floor...so I have to talk to Mr Adobe and Mr HP I think

I haven't tried setting up Active Directory and printing through that.

O Well..another day

Thanks for your help
Kirk
