dpmw32.exe hanging at shutdown on XP laptop.

XP laptop with novell client 4.91 SP4 . When shutting down the PC a message
appears about ending the task dpmw32.exe. Is there a simple fix for this
problem? Thanks for any replies.

Re: dpmw32.exe hanging at shutdown on XP laptop.

John,

You are not the only one who reported this issue, but so far we haven't
been able to get to the bottom of this issue.
dpmw32.exe is used by RPM (remote printer management). This program is run
at startup toto do the work configured by RPM (like installing or deleting
printers or setting the default printer). Once the job is done, it should
quit. On some computers, I seems to get stuck and never quite.
Are you actually using RPM? If not, you can easily solve the issue by not
loading dpmw32.exe at all. It is in one of the run keys for
hkey_local_machine.

Re: dpmw32.exe hanging at shutdown on XP laptop.

Marcel -

What would be the implications of using the iPrint client instead of the
NDPS component of Client32? At least for now, iPrint isn't giving me any
issues, and perhaps a workaround is to deploy iPrint client instead of NWPS.

If you are using RPM, then you must switch to using ICM instead for
automatic printer installation.

Is that coming some fix for this soon?
We have used Dell Laptop (Latitude) for a log time with NDPS without any problems.
It seems to be the last laptops with the new Intel Core Duo and new chipset who get problem with DPMW32.EXE

I don't think so. I have not seen any trace indicating that the problem
was ever properly diagnosed and submitted as a bug.

Re: dpmw32.exe hanging at shutdown on XP laptop.

I've been having this issue for the last 6 months. So far I haven't been able to fix it as it's sporadic, and only happens 1 in 10 times (on estimate).

It happens on machines of all types, we have old IBM A30 desktops (intel 845 era) which do it, 3 different models of laptop aged 0-3 years from gen1 Centrino up to current Core2s, Lenovo A60s (nvidia chipset).
The only common denominator is that it started to happen after I updated the images, so I'm convinced it's software, most likely a Novell Client or iPrint client problem.

The only clue I've been able to gather is that whenever dpmw32.exe hangs, another process called IMON - which is related to our antivirus software NOD32 - also hangs. I've added the C:\NDPS and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\spool folders as exceptions (so NOD doesn't scan them for viruses) and haven't seen it back yet, but I'm not convinced this has solved the problem as I haven't done any testing.

So if it's happening to you consistently, try disabling your antivirus software and see if it still happens!

Of course the other option is to force all applications to quit after they time out (I forget the registry key that does this), but this could cause your users to lose work, particularly if your workstations automatically logout after an idle time limit.
