iPrint Agent Creation

Is there a recommendation for creating a printer agent using LPR vs. Raw? We have gone with creating all of our new iPrint agents (OES 2 on SLES 10.1) as Raw and seem to have some weird issues with PCL 6 drivers. Any ideas why this would cause issues? Thanks.

Re: iPrint Agent Creation

There is no general recommendation regarding LPR or RAW. Some network pritners have a more robust LPR implementation while others work better in RAW mode. For most of them however both modes (if both supported) work equally well.
One additional "complication" for use LPR mode is that you have to specify a valid LPR pritner name. The default value "passthrough" suggested by Novell's management tools is just a random value which happens to work for printers that have a decent default behaviour on unknown LPR names, but technically, it is always the wrong value. At least I don't know one single printer where "passthrough" is an LPRname officially documented and supported by the printer manufacturer.
Generally, the type of communication protocol used should be independent of the driver used. If there are problems with a certain driver type, then it is often due to an incompatibility between the driver and the Novell iPrint client.

Thanks for your response Marcel. Do you think on those certain workstations that we are having driver issues that we should upgrade the iPrint client to the latest that just came out (5.12)? That is the one thing that we have not tried.

It's always worth trying.
What kind of pritner is this? It seems that the universal print drivers
from HP (and HP drivers in general) are especially problematic for iPrint

Re: iPrint Agent Creation

Yep - Hp drivers. But it seems to be primarily the PCL 6. We are changing some to use the PCL 5 and that is working. The one printer in particular that we are having problems with is a HP Color LJ2550 and there is no PCL 5 driver for it. So, recreating the agent to LPR instead of Raw seems to have fixed that for whatever reason. I have a follow up meeting today and will see what other issues are being encountered.

Thanks for your help!
