iPrint HP printers slow

Hi all,
iPrint on OES2015 server, all patches applied. Few HP and Xerox printers.
After update to HP UPD 6.02 drivers version users notified that print on HP printers works very slow.
Switching between HP printers takes 30 seconds (from HP to Xerox and between Xerox printers 3-5 sec, from Xerox to HP 30 seconds). Also setting detailed properties and sending job on HP printers takes long time (few seconds to switch option, printing 10 pages sometimes takes sometimes more than 5 minutes).
Applied new 6.04 iPrint client, not helped. No shortinstallname etc.
Backing to 6.0, 5.9 drivers not help, switching to direct print, also to PCL6 drivers Checked that when switching to Xerox drivers on HP printer solve speed problems but it's no option cause they have on only basic functionality on HP printers (no option to choose tray).
Customer wants to throw out iprint 🙂
Any suggestions. Anyone found the same problem ?
Regards,
Maciej

Re: iPrint HP printers slow

Done some additional research.
Installed 5.8 HP UPD - changing printer, display properties takes only 2-3 seconds (the same on Xerox printers).
On 5.9, 6.0 drivers - the same takes 7-10 seconds.
6.2 drivers - 30 seconds.
Looks HP drivers have problem with iPrint. The same 6.2 drivers used directly (as IP port) works properly.

Yes experiencing this very issue, seeing it in word 2013 extensively, just slow and sluggish particularly with "connecting to printer" messages and checking printer properties. v6.0 seems a bit better than v6.2, have not tried 5.8 but will give it a go.

We are moving from win7x64 (2010 - no issues) to win8.1x64 (office 2013) and this is the problem we are experiencing.

All other drivers, Toshiba, Oki work fine...... definitely the UPD as usual 😞

Thanks for the troubleshooting guys, looks like I'll be rolling back until the speed gets fixed.

Hi MacieJ,

I have done many extensive test to narrow the problem.

The component in problem is the Iprint Client and Novell is aware of that since many months. This is know as BUG 943681 and it's been opened in August 2015. The problem is also relate to the Microsoft Universal Driver library files contained is the UPD driver package. The driver package include some of these file beacause they a minimum requirement for driver installation. The Iprint client does not check the version of the Universal driver library and install them. If printer driver is install from a Microsoft server or directly from a local directory the problem does not exist. This mean OLD unidrv files can overwrite newer file. After that you can have slow printer enumeration. This is why you can see the connecting to print message when you try to print something or simply change the print destination.

The real reason of the slow printing enumeration is because the spooler did not created the .BUD file inside the C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3 directory. The BUF file is a binary version of the print driver. It is suppose the help the print spooler speed driver intrerpretation. There is a different BUD file for each version of the UPD driver version.

If the BUD file is not there you can delete or add a new iprint printer using the same driver and this should create a new BUD file. Before my finding i have create an small application that list every iprint printer, delete them and reinstall them from the previous list.

For now the real solution is to modify the printer inside the Iprint driver store and replace the unidrv.dll, unidrv.hlp, unidrvui.dll and unires.dll with the recent one for more recent patch. By doing this you are making sure the Iprint client will not replace the universal driver component with old version.

If you have already installed printer using universal driver, the windows workstation cache the driver inside is driver store. You have to delete the driver from the local print server and also the local driver store of the Workstation.

To delete the driver from the local Windows driver store you have to use the pnputil -e command

I hope this can help you .
