iPrint Renderer issue with 1.1

Hi all.
I have been running iPrint Appliance 1.0 for a while, and have followed the process to upgrade to 1.1 appliance (side-by-side export/import). This has worked fine.
I have tried to install the newer renderer software onto our current render box (Win7SP1), which works fine. However, when I try and run the 'iprntrendcmd -c', and hit enter at the prompt, I always get "Failed to configure secure communication channel". I have tried everything I can think of, but cannot get past this.

From the appliance (:9443) view, when I select Renderers, it tries to find the renderer, fails with..

which appears to be correct, since the correct software hasn't been configured yet.

Can anyone suggest what to try next? I'd like to get this up and running ..

Thanks.

which appears to be correct, since the correct software hasn't been configured yet.

Can anyone suggest what to try next? I'd like to get this up and running ..

Thanks.

We have the same issue, working with Novell on it... I'll let you know when we find a solution.

Thanks, Thomas, I appreciate it. At least it's not just something I'm doing 🙂

Are you using the self signed novell cert or are you using your own
certs in appliance?

Re: iPrint Renderer issue with 1.1

Seeing similar issue here too. I get past the iprntrendcmd -c step fine, but then can not connect to the renderer. Also tried a new machine as renderer, all seemed to set up fine but the new 1.1 appliance can not connect to it.

What I did notice is that the windows firewall rule sets an exception for port 4883, but looks like that port is not open in the appliance firewall. But I also tried connecting with the windows firewall off and disabled the firewall on the appliance, but still no go.

I was attempting using the Novell supplied cert.

Please pose when solution found....

Re: iPrint Renderer issue with 1.1

In my iPrint appliance, I have a GoDaddy Wildcard cert, that is imported to the Web Application Certificates, but the JVM certificates are default. (The wildcard is auto-imported when I perform the import/upgrade from my v1 appliance.)
I have tried using the default device.pfx, and replacing it with out wildcard.pfx (and renaming it) on the renderer, but it makes no difference.
I have also turned off all firewalls on the renderer.

This is not the same issue. You did not mention what error you get but
probably it is a name resolution problem and the cert name.
if you type at the renderer machine:

iprintredncmd -s

Waht do you get?

if you get running and configured then it is a different history and you
do not have dns resolution configured properly as it is mentioned on the
docs

Re: iPrint Renderer issue with 1.1

Yes, this particular issue looks to be because of name resolution. Please make sure that :

The IP address assigned to Appliance and remote renderer machine must have DNS host entry in the DNS server. The DNS entries must be in the same domain. For example, appliance.xyz.com and remoterenderer.xyz.com
Incase you do not have DNS servers to resolve the hostnames. We can use host files to resolve the same as mentioned below,

Insure that the hosts file is updated with appliance and remote renderer IP and hostname details in both the appliance and remote renderer machine. The hosts file location is as follows:

Appliance: /etc/hosts
Remote renderer in Windows machine: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

Please try that and let know if that solves the problem

Re: iPrint Renderer issue with 1.1

Great, progress. Yes, as you and Mysterious suspected, it was a DNS issue. In the V1.0 Appliance we had it working with just IP Address usage, did not have an DNS entry for the renderer. Did not see in any upgrade instructions or "New or Changed" area of Admin guide about DNS significance, though I can see it there in section 3.2, Rendered Requirements.

So, after adding the entry and pointing to it as a NEW Renderer, it is now showing as active, Version 1.1.0. Test did just print but some garbage characters so will look at that closer.

However, when I attempt to EDIT the remote renderer from the Appliance Admin console, I still get a "Unable to connect to Renderer" message so cannot change any settings there.

So, thanks for pointers so far, will do some more testing tomorrow and let you know if any changes.

Colin.

Colin,
Did u try it further. Is editing of an added renderer always throwing error "Unable to connect to Renderer" ?

Experiencing same issue as OP. New 1.1 appliance refusing to communicate with 1.1 renderer and throwing the same exceptions. Even tried a new Win 7 VM renderer with 1.1 loaded from scratch. After spending nearly 4 days on it I had no choice but to revert to 1.0.1. It seems to be some sort of certificate issue but all the tricks in the book did not work. The best I have gotten was for the renderer to appear in the renderers list as inactive but from the renderers side, it shows no active iprint servers. The appliance was configured using the export/import method and the only thing left to try is to build a new one from scratch which I might try. But nevertheless, it's clear there's some sort of bug or undocumented change in how the appliance and renderer communicate. Desperately awaiting for official info from Novell or a patch.
