iprint appliance 3.2 - downgrading possible?

Hi,

We are having issues with iprint Client 6.16_01 FTF.
Unfortunately, there seems to be a bug in iprint client 6.16 AND 6.16_01FTF. If the client is missing networks connectivity, it cannot resume working when network connectivity is back. Only restarting print spooler service seems to make it work again.
We have traced back and found out that this has started in version 6.16 which was deployed as an update back in September. The earlier version - 6.15 seems to work just fine.
We consider therefore a downgrade scenario but I am not sure how. Can I just upload the older client(6.15) to the server and copy it in the /var/opt/novell/iprint/htdocs/clients folder and replace the files? I am not sure if I can do that as the client was a part of an update. I assume that the appliance was updated when the client was applied.

just download the standalone 6.15 client and install it in the pc and
turn off on the server the automatic client update. In this way you do
not need to touch the appliance and once the new iprint client is
released, you just upload it to the appliance and turn back on the
automatic upgrade.

Re: iprint appliance 3.2 - downgrading possible?

Hi,

Well we have considered this approach. I am managing a rather big organization. More than 7 thousand devices spread over different locations. It’s a hybrid cloud based environment and I do not have my Zenworks server anymore… So it is a bit complicated...The workaround for now is to reboot or restart the spooler service. I do hope though that Mirofocus will soon issue a bug-free version of the client so it will get quieter on the users front so to say…

Micro Focus is working on it but the problem is that they could not
duplicate it at home so Micro Focus relays on someone having the problem
to provide a dump of the windows spooler process when error is present.
So far as i know, still nobody has provided this dump.
The zip contains a 38 second video showing the steps to capture the dump.

ftp://ftp.novell.com/outgoing/DumpOfSpoolerHang.zip

So if you can provide this information, it will help to speed up the fix

Hi,

Thank you for this suggestion. I will be happy to try to help. It is not as simple though as the error is happening sporadically and I need to ‘catch a user’ in order to catch it in real time. I am not sure how to upload it though. I will take a look at the mp4 you sent.

Any way, it is not so hard to duplicate this error. We did it, by breaking the network connection and try to print. The iPrint client (6.16_01FTF) returns then an error as it should.
Then, we connect to the network again and try again to print. The Iprint client (6.16_01FTF) is still returning an error. It is ‘stuck’. Only restart of the spooler service enable print again.
We took then an older version of the iprint client (6.15). Broke the network connection and got the same error. As suspected. Then we reestablished the network connection and tried again to print. The iprint client (6.15) worked again and sent the print WITHOUT need to restart the spooler service. Hence the difference.
I have been using MicroFocus products (Novell, NetIQ, SUSE…) for a long time and I am confident that you will find a good solution as always. I do hope it will be issued soon as the situation is not a nice one… 🙂

Thanks for your feedback. Once you've taken the spooler dump, upload it
to ftp://ftp.novell.com/incoming and let me know the name of the file.

Micro Focus has a new client build with a potential fix for this issue.
Please open an SR and refer to bug 1114333 to get it. Sr will be
reimbursed back.
