iprint prompting for authentication with snmp service enabled

i have had a call open with novell for 5 months and it is going no-where
even though it is easily reproduceable, so i will try here as i see some
good iprint guys hang out here.

if I take a machine with windows xp sp2 and any novell 4.9x client and any
version of iprint, and enable the windows snmp service, the first time you
login after starting your machine you will be prompted by iprint for
authentication. stop the snmp service and it goes away. this was first
documented 2 years ago in this TID :-
http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/10084076.htm
but nothing has been done about it. my support provider can reproduce this
issue as well, but novell european support are saying they cannot reproduce
it!!!

My support provider offered to send them a vmware image of a clean xp
machine and just the client & iprint and they said they can't do anything
with a vmware image, and here the call is sitting.

please can someone help me finally get this fixed, when i first logged the
call I did get to talk to a novell support tech who said that this issue was
not exclusive to the snmp service, but that the snmp service was a good way
of reproducing the issue.

thanks,

Nathan Lock

iprint prompting for authentication with snmp service enabled

I made some fixes for this a couple of years ago like you said. I do have
a few questions for you though. 1) Are you using secure printers or are
you seeing this login window without even having secure printers? 2) Do
you have the Microsoft slow printing fix on the WINXP/SP2 box (KB
893225)? 3) Are you using shortnames (from iprint.ini)? 4) What
backend are you running?

Re: iprint prompting for authentication with snmp service enabled

many thanks for your quick response, here are the answers you requested.

1) Are you using secure printers or are you seeing this login window
without even having secure printers?
We are using secure printers.

2) Do you have the Microsoft slow printing fix on the WINXP/SP2 box (KB
893225)?
No, should this help this?

3) Are you using shortnames (from iprint.ini)?
No, again should this help this?

4) What backend are you running?
Sorry forgot to post that, Netware 6.5sp3 with the latest iprint patches.

thanks again, do you have the facilities to try and reproduce this?

Re: iprint prompting for authentication with snmp service enabled

A couple more questions.
1) Are you selecting the save password check box when prompted (is that
working for you)?
2) Can you post your email and we can take this off-line and do some
iPrint tracing on this?
3) The Microsoft fix might help. I would give it a try it fixes many
issues with printing performance,....

Will you give me the incident number? I'll see if I can get your incident any
attention while you are being helped in the forum.

Re: iprint prompting for authentication with snmp service enabled

it's ok the "iprint guy" here in the forums is on top of the issue and has
identified the problem and is working on a new version of the iprint code to
fix it. I think it only affect xp sp2.
I don't have the incident number as our calls go through a uk academic
support provider, who then log it with novell european support.

Many thanks,

Nathan.

Re: iprint prompting for authentication with snmp service enabled

Just to say that the iprint developer has solved this issue and the fix
should be in the next release of the iprint client.
