maptool shows no assigned printers

I've just installed nw6.5 sp5.

When I logged into a workstation I got a message saying that the
administrator had changed the name of a printer. Now when I go to install a
printer off of my print map I get an error saying that there is no driver or
I'm using an invalid url.

When I check my map tool and click on my printer icons I see that there are
no printers assigned to the icons. When I try to reassign the printer
agents and then and save the page and come back into the page it again
either says the last printer I assigned to an icon is assigned to each
printer or that there is no agent assigned to the icon. This was not the
case before sp5. Any ideas? My phone is going nuts from people who can no
longer install printers from the map.

cheers

Re: maptool shows no assigned printers

The map is not dynamically updated with changes in the printers URL (either
the server address or DNS name changes, OR the Printer Agent name changes.)
We are considering a tool to check generated maps to make it easier. In
the mean time, you have to do what you are doing, that is, go to the map and
re-assign the printer with the new URL.

Based on what you have described, it sounds like the changes are really not
being saved. Have you tried installing from the Default IPP page just to
see if those work okay?? If so, check those URL's that are shown, and
compare those with what is displayed when you bring up the map. Are they
the same or different?? If you want, you can bring the map into an editor
and do a global search and replace, (if it is an address or dns name change,
For printer name change this is not as quick..!!)

Re: maptool shows no assigned printers

Thanks for this. It is not the URLS that are changing or the printer
names.
If I open a page in the map tool get the printer list up in the
left hand pane all the printers are there to be assigned.
If I then click on a printer icon (say printer 1) I find that it has no
printer agent
assigned and I have to reassign a printer agent to it.
If I then click on printer 2 it claims to have printer 1's agent assigned.
I then reassign the correct printer agent and save the page.
If I then click back on the printer 1 icon it will claim to have printer 2's
agent.
Totally weird and seems only since I applied sp5.

If I use the straight ipp URL and not the map then things are fine.
I work in a school so the map works for the teachers. 🙂
.. well it used to. 😞

Re: maptool shows no assigned printers

So I am a little confused. I did try this on an NW6.5 sp5 server and I am
seeing I believe some of what you are describing, however the important
piece of information (which is the Printer URL) is not changing between the
two printers. If I look at the map, highlight printer 1, in the Printer
URL I see printer 1 url. If I now add a printer (printer 2) and assign a
different printer to it, the URL is unique. If I now highlight printer 1
again... The printer that shows in the Printer List box does not change,
but the Printer URL does reflect the correct printer.

Is this what you are seeing??

Re: maptool shows no assigned printers

I am seeing the URL changing OK but not the assigned agent.
If open a one of my map pages and click on say printer 1, it shows the
correct URL but now agent. If then re-assign an agent to printer 1 it looks
OK. The URL is good and the agent is good. I then save the page. I then
click on printer 2 and its URL is good but the agent showing is the agent
for printer 1.
SO the URLS seem OK it is the agents that are not displaying correctly.

cheers
