Do Sales people have to lie?

Is it some kind of genetic malformation that they can't simply list the
parts and prices and try to ensure that the thing you're buying will do
the job you want???? And why can't they say they don't know if they
don't know????

    This might be hard to believe but I actually knew/worked with a salesman
    who lived by the biblical expression "and the truth shall set you free".
    The guy was as honest as the day was long. When the our company hired
    him some people made fun of him. The interesting thing is that we always
    made money and had good results on every project he sold. This was
    unlike the other sales people who would say anything or make any promise
    to get the sale. Some people weren't stupid and would demand what was
    promised.

    I stopped reading Dilbert when I was doing consulting because it was too
    much like real life. Now I look at Pearls Before Swine every day.
