For those of you waiting on the replacement for GMS, Alex posted an
update to his blog yesterday.

Wonder what everyone thinks about the one and only supported
configuration...

With great power comes great responsibility.
  • Actually, I'm okay with it going on 64-bit SLES 11. We've got more Linux
expertise in house than anything else.

When you buy GW, you get a SLES license with it, right? Do you get
unlimited installs of SLES? at least 2? Does this even still come
    packaged with GW?

If not, then I think it stinks (even though it really wouldn't affect
    me).

If the license for the OS is included, then I don't have any problem
with it; I'm used to somewhat tight restrictions with other software.
The DB restrictions are par for the course.

I'm due for a new phone in the fall, me thinks I will be dropping the
suckberry and going for a droid (or maybe an iPhail if they come to
    VZW) and trying this.

If you're MLA you have to pay extra for the SLES subscriptions, it's not included in your GW license.

If you run SLES in a VM then you don't have to pay the sub.

But 64-bit, yeah I can see that as an issue. If the software is so "piggy" as to require 64-bit (like Exchange is) then it really has no business being in a VM, IMO. And if it's not in a VM, then I have to pay for the extra license and with our discount, it's cheaper to use MS Windows than SLES subscription.

This announcement will play very large into the question of keeping
GroupWise for my company. With Novell killing NetWare, our intentions are to
move to MS server for files services and at the last IT oversight meeting
with department heads, it was decided to keep GroupWise as it was supported
    on MS server.

The only environment that I have to run SLES in on VMware but we are rather
maxed out already and without additional upgrades to our VM clusters, I just
    don't see it happening.

I have no issue with SLES but the corner that Novell is forcing us into just
    got a lot smaller.

  • Hang on, my MLA "My products" shows a SLES license under GroupWise? So as a
MLA customer, I have to buy a license for SLES to run a gateway service
unless I run it on VMware ?!?!? (Serious cuss words come to mind which I
    can't type)

If I can found out who my current sales rep is (It seems the turn over has
been high), I'm going to call them and find out for sure but I doubt if they
    will know.

I'm SLA, so it's a non-issue for me, but I always thought that if you
bought nothing else, and bought just straight groupwise, then you
received a license for SLES along with it. Was it ever like this?

Since Alex is the GroupWise Product Manager I would say yes.

That's how it was for VLA. Question is does the SLES entitlement only
apply to SLES 10 or does it apply to SLES 11?

Perhaps someone should ask this question via a comment to the blog
    posting.

That's what I remember mine use to look like, but it doesn't now. I
have an academic bundle that puts them all in the same family.

You may want to include all of this in a comment to the blog posting.
